Please note that if your machine is new, it may still produce a variety of smells or odors. While we understand you have many choices when purchasing supplies for your Brother product, Brother strongly recommends the use of genuine Brother supplies, which have been designed specifically for use with Brother products. In certain cases Brother has also found use of non-Brother toner caused machines to emit a burning smell.

A burning smell may also be noticed if there was a paper jam in the fuser and it wasn't removed completely. In extreme cases, the smell can linger for several hours. When the machine is then powered on, the fuser and the interior of the machine heats up the toner or dust and a smell occurs until it all dissipates. The smell can be more intense if the printer has been off for a length of time and toner or dust builds up on the fuser unit or on the charge corona wire in the drum unit. The smell is typically from the normal operation of the machine and can be toner, room dust, or ozone.
